About Us
Our story began in 1993, when Karen Ufer opened Yoga Focus as a dedicated space for the practice and teaching of Iyengar yoga. In 2023, longtime Yoga Focus teacher, Marlene McGrath, purchased the yoga suites and business to continue the tradition of practice and teaching in our studio space. Our new name, Yoga Focus Collective, signifies the mission of bringing together like-minded teachers to serve our collective students and the community. Yoga Focus Collective is a yoga school dedicated to teaching of yoga in the tradition began by B.K.S. Iyengar, and continued by Iyengar yoga-trained teachers around the world. This system of yoga stretches and strengthens the body, the mind and the spirit, and is characterized by its use of yoga props to enrich its practice. Yoga enhances well-being through its effect on muscles, nerves, glands, organs, and circulation. Practice and discipline bring the student toward a state of alertness, health, and peace. Yoga Focus Collective is a fully equipped yoga school, and the teachers are Iyengar certified or have completed a multi-year apprenticeship with an Iyengar teacher. We value our personal practice, our continuing education with senior Iyengar teachers, and the respect we have for our students. Yoga Focus Collective is a safe, noncompetitive environment for the study and practice of yoga.
WHAT IS IYENGAR YOGA?
Yogacharya BKS Iyengar, the author of "Light On Yoga", practiced and taught for over 80 years making yoga accessible to everyone regardless of age or ability. Mr. Iyengar created a system of yoga that is safe, methodical, and challenging. All students work at their own ability level, and teachers are trained to teach to the individual's needs and abilities. This practice creates both an awareness and a compassion that are brought into our daily lives.
